Frequently Asked Questions

I’m not sure if I need a physiotherapist.
That’s easy. If you are not sure, then give us a call for some free no obligation advice. This allows us to determine whether or not you would benefit from seeing us. If, following our conversation, it is decided that physiotherapy would benefit you we can arrange for an appointment there and then but if is not indicated we aim to point you in the right direction so your problem can be investigated and resolved as soon as possible.

What happens in the treatment sessions?
Your first session will include a thorough assessment and treatment. We use a specifically designed assessment followed by diagnosis, explanation of the problem and treatment of the area in question. Treatments vary with each individual as they are tailored to suit your needs but usually include manual therapy (“Hands on” treatment) and possibly ultrasound if indicated. At the same time your therapist will design a specific exercise programme for you and give important advice to take to help resolve your symptoms, increase function and cure the cause

What happens next?
Further sessions if required may involve joint mobilization, soft tissue massage, joint manipulation, ultrasound, postural correction, further exercises for home and gym and preventative advice and self management techniques.

What happens if physiotherapy doesn't help me?
If your condition is not improving after 2 weeks we will refer you to your G.P for further investigations (X-Ray or Blood tests) or to a consultant, if necessary for an MRI or surgery. We have close connections with some of the best orthopaedic and spinal surgeons in the area.

What should I wear?
Wear what makes you feel comfortable, but if we need to treat hips or knees then shorts are advisable. If we need to treat necks, backs or shoulders it is advisable to wear a top that allows access to those areas if necessary.

How long do sessions last?
Typically 30 minutes. If the situation allows we are sometimes able to give extra time. Paediatric physiotherapy is 60 minutes.

Will it hurt?
Generally, at Farrell physiotherapy we try to make your treatment as comfortable as possible but there are a couple of situations that will require more intense pressure and treatment techniques. These are few and far between; you will be forewarned and at any time can opt to cease treatment if it is too painful.

Do we accept private health/ medical insurance?
Yes we do. We are registered to accept most major health insurance companies. Please call us and we can confirm with you if you are covered. We are now a BUPA recognised provider. Anyone with BUPA Healthcare can be seen at our clinic. We now deal with ALL major private health insurance companies aswell as BUPA.

Testimonials...
"Following a prolapsed disc problem I received regular physiotherapy from Ben Farrell. I found his combination of treatment and advice of a structured exercise regime enabled my recovery without the need for surgical intervention. His ability to explain in clear terms the mechanics of the problem helped no end in understanding the necessity for self help through exercise. I would thoroughly recommend his services."
